Description

CultureShock! Switzerland is your companion to settling down in the land best-known for watches, chocolates and the Swiss Army knife. Despite its small size, Switzerland has a rich geographical landscape, and holds a unique position in history by virtue of its location and neutral political stand. Discover why there is more than one national language to accommodate the different cultural and ethnic groups, and why the Swiss identify closely with the canton (province) in which they live. From dealing with the authorities on tax and immigration issues to appreciating the food, culture and recreation, this book provides the practical information you will need. Let CultureShock! Switzerland help you get the most out of your stay and make it a fun, fruitful experience.

Swiss-German born, Max Oettli spent two decades in New Zealand where his family emigrated when he was 10 years old. After studying Humanities at the University of Auckland, he gained a considerable reputation in photography, which he has made his life’s work. Returning to Switzerland in 1976, he was active as a photographer, specialising in Architecture and town planning and a teacher in various institutions of higher learning. He lectured at the Geneva University of Technology for 27 years. With two grown sons, Max and his family lived on the outskirts of Geneva for 20 years. He was actively involved in politics on a state and local level, and was widely published both as a photographer and as a writer in his native country. His photographic work was seen mainly in calendars and architectural reviews, as well as a major book on Geneva’s 20th-century architecture. His writing, mainly in French, has been on the interface of photography with various other cultural and political aspects of life. Max left Switzerland for New Zealand to take up a senior position at the Dunedin School of Fine Arts in 2007. An enthusiastic if somewhat messy cook, Oettli’s primary hobby is to enjoy life and to pursue various visual and cultural activities in different contexts.
