Description
CultureShock! Chile is your one-stop guide to settling in the country and adapting to life in a new land. Learn from the authors’ experience as they share insights into the Chilean work etiquette, navigating the class system, setting up home and using the estufa and califont as well as what generally makes the people tick in this South American nation. Discover the country’s myriad attractions from the Atacama Desert to beautiful La Serena. Sample Chilean fare such as prietas and cazuelas and wash it all down with a glass of red wine from one of the many excellent vineyards. Having overcome its turbulent political history, Chile now struggles to balance its traditional values with the demands of a modern economy. CultureShock! Chile is essential reading for anyone who plans to be in Chile for an extended period.
Susan Roraff was born in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Masters degree in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University. Following graduation, she worked at the Latin American Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC. She then moved to Santiago, where she worked at an economics research organisation. It was during this time that she met her Chilean husband and travelled extensively throughout Latin America. Since then she has lived in Singapore and Vienna, Austria, and co-authored CultureShock! Austria. She periodically returns ‘home’ to Santiago with her husband and two sons.
Laura Camacho, a native of Galena, Illinois, was a Rotary exchange student to Bolivia. She later married a Latin American and studied Psychology at the Catholic University in La Paz, Bolivia for three years. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish and a Master’s degree in Spanish Literature and Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Laura has lived the expatriate life on four continents, but her heart remains in Latin America.
