Description
It is impossible to visit Cuba and not be captured by its vibrance, culture, art, music, dance, architecture, history--and hope. Warm, curious, welcoming--but anxious, the people on the streets and in the neighborhoods desperately hope that the new era of improved relations with the US leads to better living conditions and greater opportunities for their children. They are nervous about our presidential elections, fearing a new President may undo what has been started.
The change to come will be difficult. Obsolete and crumbling infrastructure, a dual currency system, and a population wed to government jobs and handouts, all present big challenges. Surface change is already happening with more street vendors, small restaurants, tiny B&B’s for rent--some with running water--and the ability to buy a new car and apartment--if you have the money which very few do. But it will take decades for real change to trickle down to the blighted neighborhoods,
If one wants to visit Cuba before the difficult changes begin to alter the innocence of her people, now is a good time. You will be changed by the experience.
